The first films are developed and the outcome from what the families made is surprising, moving and touching sometimes. I am very happy with that! Because... well I was wondering... it took such a long time sometimes... but most families worked in a very economic way, really choosing what to photograph and when. Also that's surprising because... new for me.

Looking at the results each family gave a good impression of family and family life...

The crash in Smolensk. 80 people died in the plain crash. Many high officials, from church, army, politicians, including the president of Poland and his wife.

Gosia and I went on a visit to Beate. Bringing a new film and have a chat...

Ania has been - and still is a little - sick. So most pictures taken by Beate are from inside the house. We said also hello to the grandfather (84) of Beate who appears to shake hands and has his own room in the house.
Bobby is lively present! Here are two impressions of this visit.

This family preferred to meet in a more neutral place for the first time. So we met at Manufaktura, the big shopping mall in the former textile industrial complex close to Baluty. Besides shops you will find there many restaurants from every kind; from Japanese and Mexican to Burger King, but also cinema's, a place for bowling, a swimming pool, places to skate or to clime and... a Museum of Modern Art.

Agnieszka (12) we met already earlier in the meeting we had with other families which was organized by Tomasz Dabrowski from a Social Centrum in Baluty.

So we familiarize with mother and daughter and spoke together in a noisy place full of people. I think the ice was broken very soon.
Mainly Agnieszka is going to be the photographer. She wants to document the Heavy Metal concerts she is visiting with her friends.

Last Friday we visited again a family who is going to participate in the project.

We met mother Danuta and one of her sons. But not the one who is going to photograph... Adriaan.

He is quite young, eight year , and very eager to participate... We are going to see him on monday.

A very memorable visit by the way because of the 'dogs concert'.

Kasia Szubert and family

Wednesday, more then a week ago already, we visited Kasia Szubert and family in 'the Kamienica' at Plac. Koscielny 4, right in the center of Stare Baluty.

Kasia was our first contact. We met already in February. She has a younger brother, Tomek and they live with their parents in a apartment which gives a view at the inner courtyard of the building.

Kasia studies philosophy at Lodz University, Tomek attend school and both parents are working. Mother in shifts. As far as I understood now!...

To the Kamienica at Plac Koscielny number 4 again.

Friday late afternoon. Agnieszka and I visited Miss Boƶena Nejman, her daughter Kasia and friend who wants probably not with his name on the web I suppose... But probably I am wrong in this. I didn't ask.

We spoke about the project Baluty-Baluty and got to hear from Kasia that she is excited about the project and eager to participate in it. Good news, smiling faces!

Third family visit

Last Friday (the 12th) we visited a new family.

This family contacted us after seeing the poster somewhere in Baluty. So we got the address, made an appointment and Gosia and I went there...

From the family we only met Lucas who was "alone with the cats". Afterwards we met also Ada (14). She came from school later.
The other family-members where at work and we will meet next time.

Lucas started more or less immediate a very lively discussion. His point was: Why do you want to make "a portrait" of ordinary people. He could understand that somebody should be interested in extremes like 'grazy artists' or people living on the edge... But why people who are like everybody and making a project about something everybody already knows?....

I explained that in my vision nobody is like everybody. For me every individual is in one way or another very special and unique... Everybody, and also every family, has his own unique stories to tell.
In short: Nobody is the same. And the real surprises are to be found in "ordinary life".

And.... I think, we humans, are condemned to endless curiosity for other human beings. Who are they? How do they live? Which choices did they make in life? Why?

People also love storytelling. We are consumers of stories. This goes from gossiping, soaps on television to literature and film. And I feel very good to be a photographer storyteller...

Very nice to start our visit with this philosophical conversation!

Second family conversation

Getting good courage after our visit at Kasia Szubert's house, we tried to contact another family who had participated in the 'Kamienica' project. So ringing again at peoples doors...

It turns out to be number 26... And we could make an appointment for later that week.

We spoke Miss Bozena Nejman (and with the dogs!) about our "Baluty-Baluty"-project and she was quite sure her daughter should like to participate...

During our vistit I my eye was attracted by a small painting hanging on the wall. It was a portrait of an Jewish man, so I asked: What and Why?

She told us that somebody gave it to her. And having a Jewish portrait on the wall means happiness and prosperity...

She also told us that the apartment she lives in, so in the very place we were sitting at that moment, Ruth Eldar had lived. She was one of the people they managed to trace. Ruth Eldar was - and still is! - a Jewish lady living in Israel nowadays. As far as I understood she lived in the flat before Baluty became Litzmannstadt-Getto. This old part of Baluty was already a very wellknown Jewish quarter for many many years.

Ruth Eldar managed to survive the war as the only member of her family. She wrote her auto biography/memories down, a book which I didn't manage to trace yet. It seems to be untraceable on internet... Ruth Eldar is visiting Lodz now and then.

Also Miss Bozena Nejman and her daughter Kasia we are going to visit soon. As I said, probably tomorrow?

Szukają wszystkiego, co dotyczy kamienicy przy pl. Kościelnym 4: dawnych właścicieli i mieszkańców, starych zdjęć, archiwalnych dokumentów. Zaczęło się od spotkania na... strychu.

Kilkunastu licealistów podjęło się napisania historii narożnej kamienicy przy pl. Kościelnym 4. Na razie uczą się, jak przeprowadzać wywiady, zbierają wiadomości

o dawnych i współczesnych mieszkańcach, wybierają się też do archiwum, aby wyszperać jakieś ciekawostki. Efektem ma być książka opowiadająca dzieje tego budynku i jego mieszkańców.

- Mam nadzieję, że uda nam się zgromadzić dużo informacji o ludziach, którzy tu mieszkali, i wydarzeniach związanych z tą kamienicą. Liczymy też na to, że znajdziemy stare zdjęcia-mówi Dorota Kaniewska, koordynatorka projektu.

Narożna kamienica przy pl. Kościelnym i ul. Zgierskiej ma ponad sto lat. Jej historia ściśle związana jest z dziejami łódzkiego getta. Tu mieściło się wiele ważnychinstytu-cji, na drugim piętrze tworzona była m.in. codzienna kronika getta, gdzie pracowali żydowscy pisarze i dziennikarze, działał wydział statystyczny, gdzie swoje prace tworzyli artyści. W oficynie funkcjonowało kolegium rabinackie. To także budynek często fotografowany, jest na wielu zdjęciach z czasu II wojny światowej, bo tuż obok znajdował się charakterystyczny most rozpięty nad ul. Zgierską łączący dwie części zamkniętej dzielnicy. Organizatorzy podkreślają jednak, że równie ważne, jak historia kamienicy, jest obecne życie mieszkańców, dlatego zależy im, by w projekt włączyli się dzisiejsi lokatorzy, zwłaszcza młodzież. A także ci, którzy pamiętają to miejsce z lat 50. czy 60. Opisane będzie cale stulecie.

Projekt "Kamienica"jest realizowany w ramach programu "Dla Tolerancji" Fundacji Stefana Batorego. Bierze w nim udział kilkanaście osób, głównie uczniowie znajdującego się w sąsiedztwie XIII LO. Organizatorami są Dom Kultury "502" na Widzewie oraz Stowarzyszenie Kultu-ralno-Edukacyjne "Venae Artis". W pierwszym spotkaniu, które zorganizowane zostało na strychu kamienicy (by wszyscy się zmieścili), wzięło udział kilkanaście osób. Dwie mieszkanki budynku - studentka socjologii i tegoroczna maturzystka-już napisały swoje osobiste historie tego domu.

Kasia Nejman mieszka przy pl Kościelnym 4, odkąd pamięta. Urodziła się w 1989 r. i ma mnóstwo wspomnień związanych z tym miejscem Przede wszystkim z podwórkiem gdzie bawiła się z innymi dziećmi - Ulubionym miejscem naszych zabaw były komórki, bawiliśmy się w nich w chowanego i w tzw. czarną rękę. I chodziliśmy po dachach - opowiadała swoim rówieśnikom, którzy jej wspomnienia zapiszą i potem włączą do książki. Licealiści spotkają się też z najstarszymi mieszkańcami. m.in. synami pierwszego dozorcy po 1945 r. Czeka ich też wywiad z Rutli Eldar, autorką książki "Wstrząsnąć filarami świątyni". To jej dziadkowie byli przed wojną właścicielami mieszkania na trzecim piętrze, żyli tam aż do likwidacji getta w 1944 r. Pani Eldar mieszka obecnie w Izraelu, ale często odwiedza rodzinne miasto.

Książkę mają uzupełnić fotografie zrobione przez młodzież z Klubu Foto pod kierunkiem Jolanty Proszak. Będą to portrety mieszkańców, które trafią też na wystawę. Projekt ma zostać zakończony w czerwcu 2008 r.

Bartłomiej Dana "Ruth Eldar o łódzkim getcie"

Opowiedziała o latach swojej młodości przeżytych w łódzkim getcie, wywózce do Auschwitz i późniejszych podróżach po świecie. Do Łodzi przyjechała Ruth Eldar, autorka książki "Wstrząsnąć filarami świątyni".

Doskonale pamiętam wazon i miejsce w mieszkaniu, gdzie stały oleandry - rozpoczyna swoją opowieść Ruth Eldar. Łodzianka, która przed i w czasie drugiej wojny mieszkała w kamienicy przy pl. Kościelnym 4 w Łodzi, spotkała się z uczniami XIII l jceum Ogólnokształcącego w Domu Kultury "502". Opowiedziała o czasach swojej młodości. - Pamiętam ciężki zielony kolor tapety. Na ścianie wisiała replika obrazu Van Gogha, portret Rimskiego-Korsako-wa i półokrągłe lustro z epoki. Jedno okno z mieszkania wychodziło na kościół, drugie na Zgierską. Było z niego widać drewnianą kładkę, po której przechodziło się na drugą stronę ulicy. Pamiętam doskonale każdą rzecz. Miałam piękne dzieciństwo.

Autorka książki "Wstrząsnąć filarami świątyni", w której opisuje lata swojego życia w łódzkim getcie, bardziej narzeka na słuch niż słabą pamięć.

- Mój tatuś, pilsudczyk, miał poglądy liberalne - opowiada pisarka. - Mnie i mojemu bratu pozwalał nawet czytać "Dekameron" Boccaccia. Pamiętam unoszący się z jego ust zapach herbaty i papierosów. Mama z kolei była osobą bardzo surową, konserwatywną.

Pisarka bardzo długo opowiadała licealistom o mieszkaniu wraz z babcią w łódzkiej Kamienicy, pobycie w obozie koncentracyjnym Auschwitz, który jako jedyna z rodziny przeżyła, pracy w niemieckiej fabryce i powojennym powrocie do swojego ukochanego miasta Łodzi w poszukiwaniu bliskich. Mówiła o wyjeździe z mężem do Paryża w roku 1946 i późniejszym do Jerozolimy w 1950, gdzie osiedliła się na stale i mieszka do dziś.

Uczniowie z ciekawością przysłuchiwali się wspominkom Ruth. - Nie bójcie się, pytajcie - zachęcała sama pisarka.

Eldar przyjechała do Łodzi na zaproszenie Doroty Kaniewskiej z Domu Kultury "502". - To część projektu "Kamienica" realizowanego przy współpracy z Fundacją Stefana Batorego od czerwca ubiegłego roku - tłumaczy Kaniewska. - Na przykładzie kamienicy przy pl. Kościelnym 4 i dzięki spotkaniom z ludźmi, którzy kiedyś tam mieszkali, uczymy młodzież historii.

- Takich rzeczy nie dowiem się na lekcji w szkole - mówi Patrycja Pietrzak z XIII LO. - Każda z rozmów z ludźmi, którzy przeżyli wojnę, daje mi coś cennego i wartościowego. Coś, o czym nie wiedziałam.

W czasie spotkania pisarka została poproszona o odczytanie jednego ze swoich wierszy pt. "Dwie ojczyzny" o miłości do dwóch krajów: Polski i Izraela. Kiedy skończyła, zapadła krótka cisza. - Ruth, przecież ty jesteś nasza, łodzianka! - krzyknął ktoś z sali, doprowadzając pisarkę do łez.

Anna Pawłowska "Połączyła ich kamienica"

Kamienica przy placu Kościelnym 4 w Łodzi od XIX wieku była świadkiem wielu wydarzeń, często bardzo tragicznych. W okresie okupacji znajdowała się na terenie getta żydowskiego, obok niej przebiegała drewniana kładka nad ulicą Zgierską łącząca dwie części getta. Widok z okna kamienicy na getto namalowała Sara Majerowicz, żydowska malarka, której obraz znajduje się w Muzeum Sztuki. W kamienicy tej powstawała kronika getta łódzkiego.

Efektem zainteresowania wyjątkową kamienicą na Batutach jest książka zatytułowana "Kamienica-pqłączyła nas historia".

Koordynowany przez Dorotę Kaniewska i Annę Lisiewicz projekt polegał na badaniu historii budynku poprzez wywiady z jej mieszkańcami oraz szukaniu dokumentów w Archiwum Państwowym. W działania te zaangażowali się młodzi ludzie z pobliskiego XIII Liceum Ogólnokształcącego.

- Przy placu Kościelnym 4 mieszka nasza koleżanka, Anna Dąbrowicz, nauczycielka plastyki. Ona nas zainteresowała tą kamienicą - opowiada o początkach projektu Dorota Kaniewska, kierownik Domu Kultury "502" na Widzewie.

Prace ruszyły w marcu ubiegłego roku. Obfitowały w akcje integrujące mieszkańców kamienicy, choćby happening na strychu czy sesja zdjęciowa przed kamienicą i na jej podwórku.

Budynek wybudowano w 1894 roku.

- Przed wojną mieszkali w niej ludzie o wysokich aspiracjach społecznych^ zamożni. Ich mieszkania uchodziły za jedne z piękniejszych w mieście - opowiada Anna Lisiewicz, na co dzień instruktor artystyczny w DK "502". -W czasie wojny znajdował się w niej urząd statystyczny, w którym powstawała kronika getta, i wiele innych instytucji. Po wojnie natomiast osiedlili

się w niej napływowi mieszkańcy.

Kamienica była naj częściej fotografowanym obiektem getta w czasie wojny. Na jednym ze zdjęć w oknie za oleandrami widać małą dziewczynkę. To Ruth Eldar, 8o-let-nia dziś poetka, mieszkająca w Jerozolimie.

- Udało nam się dotrzeć do Ruth Eldar. Przyjechała do Łodzi, spotkała się

z pracującą przy projekcie młodzieżą - opowiada Dorota Kaniewska. - Zapytałyśmy ją o malarkę Sarę Majerowicz, tę która namalowała widok z kładką.

Okazało się, że Sara, używająca trzech nazwisk: Gliksman, Majerowicz i Fajtlowicz, mogła wyjść za mąż za kogoś z rodziny Ruth Eldar. Babcia poetki nazywała się bowiem z domu Fajtlowicz.

Zagłębianie się w historię kamienicy i jej mieszkańców przynosiło niesamowite historie.

- Po wojnie pewnych mieszkańców kamienicy odwiedził ktoś podający się za byłego właściciela zajmowanego przez nich mieszkania. Zaproponował im odświeżenie przedpokoju. Okazało się, że w ścianie mieściła się skrytka z kosztownościami, którymi tajemniczy przybysz podzielił się z ludźmi zajmującymi mieszkanie - opowiada Anna Lisiewicz.

Skarbów w pożydowskiej kamienicy było więcej. Mieszkańcy opowiadali, że dzieci po wojnie często znajdowały w piwnicy żydowskie monety. Bawiły się nimi,.podkładając pod przejeżdżający po szynach tramwaj. Na strychu znaleziono stare księgi w języku niemieckim i w jidisz - te przetrwały do dziś.

- Ruth Eldar, kiedy tworzono getto, zamieszkała w dwupokojowym mieszkaniu babci, razem z całą rodziną: mamą, bratem i ojcem, oficerem Wojska Polskiego, który wrócił z niemieckiego oflagu. Byli rodziną żydowską, ale czuli się Polakami. Ruth mówi, że do tej pory potrafi myśleć tylko po polsku - dodaje Lisiewicz.

Łodzianie będą mieli okazję zapoznać się ze zdjęciami z realizacji projektu od 14 czerwca na wystawie w Manufakturze. Może książka lub zdjęcia natchną kogoś do własnych poszukiwań. Kamienica, kryje pewnie jeszcze sporo tajemnic.

Joanna Podolska "Portret zwyczajnej łódzkiej kamienicy"

To niebywałe. Łódzka kamienica doczekała się monografii. Napisali ją sami mieszkańcy przy pomocy młodzieży z XIII LO

"Kiedyś podwórko wydawało mi się ogromne, ogromne i piękne. Było tu bezpiecznie, był tu mój dom i patrząc przez pryzmat czasu, obserwuję zmiany, jakie zaszły w wyglądzie tego miejsca i w mentalności ludzi tutaj"-wyznała Kasia Szubert, jedna z mieszkanek kamienicy, uczestniczka projektu.

Książka "Kamienica... połączyła nas historia" ma 77 stron. Składają się na nią przede wszystkim rozmowy z mieszkańcami domu przy placu Kościelnym 41 fotografie, zarówno archiwalne, jak i współczesne. Pomogły też badania przeprowadzone w Archiwum Państwowym w Łodzi. Sięgnięto aż do dokumentów z 1894 roku, kiedy ginach był budowany przy zbiegu ul. Zgierskiej i placu Kościelnego. Mamy tu historię przypadkowych lokatorów, choćby bezdomnej pani Basi, która zamieszkała w pomarańczowym Wartburgu na podwórku i od czasu do czasu prosiła mieszkańców o podsmażenie mięsa. "Jak ktoś się wychowa w kamienicy, a potem go wcisną do bloków, to się czuje tak, jakby był tam za karę. Nie ma to jak kamienica..." - stwierdził Jan Sobolewski.

Wszystko zaczęło się w ubiegłym roku. Od spotkania z mieszkańcami na strychu domu. - Zależało nam na tym, by oni byli współtwórcami tej książki, żeby chcieli rozmawiać z młodzieżą - wspomina Dorota Kaniewska. Do projektu zgłosiły się dwie Kasie mieszkające w kamienicy od dzieciństwa. Dziewczyny nie tylko robiły wywiady z sąsiadami, ale napisały też swoje wspomnienia. "Patrzę na to miejsce z zupełnie innej perspektywy niż kiedyś, oczyma" wyobraźni oglądam stare mury i pamiętając historię sprzed lat, widzę życie, które kiedyś tu ludzie wiedli" - pisze w książce Kasia Szubert,

"Nie znając przeszłości, trudno mówić o teraźniejszości" - dodaje Kasia Nejman, tegoroczna maturzystka. Z rodzicami obu Kaś i innymi lokatorami rozmawiali pozostali uczestnicy projektu - uczniowie XIII LO. Z tych puzzli ułożyła się bardzo ciekawa, wielobarwna, wielopokoleniowa historia kamienicy, która jest zwierciadłem dziejów Łodzi.

Najstarsza bohaterka książki - Ruth Eldar, mieszka w Jerozolimie, przed wojną przy pl. Kościelnym 4 żyli jej dziadkowie. Ona wraz z rodzicami sprowadziła się tu w 1940 r. Z kolei Zofia Wawszczak zamieszkała tu zaraz po wojnie. "Była to jedna wielka rudera. Wszędzie walało się pełno guzików i śmieci" - mówi w wywiadzie. Tu w marcu 1946 roku przyszła na świat jej córka Wiesława. "Bawiliśmy się na podwórku w kapsle i w dziada" - wspominają dzisiejsi dwudziestoparolatkowie. A pan Sobolewski (rocznik 1941) pamięta, jak stolarz zrobił dzieciakom "klipę". - Rysowało się kółko i waliło się w nie drewnianymi klockami" - opowiada. Władysław Zaremba (ur. 1953 r.) mówi: "W kiplo się grało, fajerką na drucie się jeździło po ulicach, po kocich łbach". Z kolei jego starszy brat Kazimierz Zaremba (ur. 1943 r.) pamięta, że na środku podwórka stała szubienica. Została rozebrana dopiero, jak wprowadził się Sobolewski, który nie miał gdzie postawić swojej dorożki. Dorota Garus wspomina, jak jakiś ciemnoskóry lokator postanowił się ogrzać i rozpalił w mieszkaniu ognisko. Ogień gasiła straż pożarna.

Na zdjęciach zamieszczonych w książce widać bohaterów opowieści - mieszkańców kamienicy i uczniów przeprowadzających wywiady. "Ten o projekt nauczył mnie dyscypliny i pracy w grupie. Czuję, że coś osiągnęłam, w końcu zostałam współautorką książki, z czego mogę być dumna" - stwierdziła Ola Stawiszyńska. Podobnie jak ona mogą być dumni pozostali uczestnicy projektu - uczniowie XIII LO i mieszkańcy kamienicy przy placu Kościelnym 4. Projekt realizowany był przez Widzewskie Domy Kultury. Został dofinansowany przez Fundację im Stefana Batorego.

Projekt "Kamienica" podsumowuje wystawa w Manufakturze. Historię budynku przy pl. Kościelnym 4 opowiadają zdjęcia i film, a przede wszystkim książka napisana przez młodzież z XIII Liceum Ogólnokształcącego. Można ją dostać w Muzeum Fabryki

Projekt społeczno-kulturalny "Kamienica" zdobył grant Fundacji Batorego w ramach programu "Dla tolerancji". Uczniowie XIII LO przy ul. Pacanowskiej (blisko pl. Kościelnego) nauczyli się przeprowadzać wywiady, szukać informacji w archiwum, a co najważniejsze - tworzyć książkę. Przygotowali ją pod opieką Doroty Kaniowskiej i Anny Lisiewicz, koordynujących badania. W efekcie powstała monografia kamienicy opisująca jej stuletnie dzieje na podstawie dokumentów, zdjęć, wspomnień dawnych i obecnych mieszkańców.

Na rynku Manufaktury można obejrzeć wybór archiwalnych fotografii, które opowiadają historię domu. Współczesne zdjęcia pokazują przebieg projektu i portretują mieszkańców. Wykonała je młodzież pod kierunkiem Jolanty Proszak. Oprócz tego w Muzeum Fabryki jest wyświetlany 15-minutowy film o kamienicy, dokumentujący rn.in. artystyczną akcję na strychu, która zainicjowała projekt. Na otwarcie wystawy i projekcję filmu przyszli również mieszkańcy kamienicy.

Pierwsza wzmianka o budynku przy pl. Kościelnym 4 znaleziona w archiwach miejskich pochodzi z 1894 r. Gmach można zobaczyć na wielu zdjęciach - to obok niego stal charakterystyczny dla krajobrazu łódzkiego getta drewniany most nad ul. Zgierską. Kamienica została też sportretowana na impresjonistycznym obrazie Sary Gliksman-Majerowicz, który znajduje się w kolekcji Muzeum Sztuki. Tu mieszkała Ruth Eldar, izraelska pisarka, która często odwiedza rodzinne miasto. Małą Ruth widać w oknie kamienicy na niemieckim zdjęciu z czasów wojennych.

"Kamienica" to kolejny projekt (m.in. po "W sprzecznym mieście" Galerii Manhattan) wskrzeszający lokalną pamięć. Łodzianie zaczynają dostrzegać znaczenie "małej historii" w tworzeniu tożsamości. Zdjęcia na rynku Manufaktury oraz film w Muzeum Fabryki można oglądać do końca czerwca. W muzeum wszyscy chętni mogą bezpłatnie otrzymać książkę

During my first exploring visit in February we had already a talk with a family who probably could be interested in participating in the project. We should look in 'the Kamienica' at Plac Kościelny nr. 4.

This information came from Lucja Robak from 'The Friends of Stare Baluty' at Stary Rynek (number 1) who knows a lot about 'Stare Baluty', from recent and past...

She told about the project done by the inhabitants of this building in 2008. This kamienica had been build in 1894. The project, called "Połączyla nas historia", is a research after all traceable preceding occupants of the building over the years. Including themselves!
This project, initiated and in cooperation with pupils from a Lodz Lyceum (Liceum Ogólnokształcącego), was interesting in particular because (of course also here!) this building had a special function in the Litzmannstadt-Getto where was housed the Population Records Department.

At 2/4 Plac Koscielny was housed the Population Records Department, including the Registration Office, the Registry, the Statistics Department and the Archives. Here, in the Statistics Department The Chronicle of the Lodz Ghetto was compiled, one of the most important documents of the Second World War.

The employees of the Archives gathered everything and anything concerning the operation of the ghetto. The documents include announcements, posters and circulars. Rumkowski's speeches were saved. Passports, identity cards and private letters of deportees were collected. Amazingly, a significant number of those documents survived. Above all, The Chronicle news reports were saved.

But besides that families where living there in the apartments in the kamienica all the time.

Finally we found by trying to ring at the houses doors and ask Kasia Szubert who was a participant in this project. She showed us the little book what was made after the project.

Unfortunately it's not available anymore...

The family of Kasia Szubert is going to participate in our project! I just heard this today. Tomorrow we will visit her and her family.

Just before my departure from Rotterdam I got this message from Ludmila Mielczarek, project coordinator from the Foto Festiwal Lodz...

Dear Rob,

Yesterday we got the news that we WILL HAVE EMPTY space here in LODZ ART CENTER. It is big space, very industrial, please visit us I'll show it to you.

So of course - this is good news! - we went directly after my arrival to the Lodz Art Center to meet. 'We' means Maciek, Monika and me.

Well everybody in a good mood. Ludmila shows us around and we made the appointment to dream and to come with concrete plans next week.

A big responsibility is on our shoulders now. The space is huge and fantastic. What you call a challenge...

Lodz revisited...

Tuesday 9th I arrived in Lodz again. Baluty-Baluty is really starting now. Within a few days I thought... but it turns out to be in a few hours... Just after my arrival...

My train travel? Nothing spectacular... Still some snow on the fields.

And finally Kutno where I missed my connection but found - YES! _ my first (empty) bottle of Vodka, the last bits of snow in a friendly inviting sunny atmosphere...

Nice to be back in Poland!

But... what was actually spectacular for me... I saw some dear in the field, a buzzard in a tree, a magpie busy with his nest high in a tree and... one crane in a field!

Later two more... What is this? Cranes all over the place in Poland? Beautiful!

Kim są Baluciarze?

"Bałuty - Bałuty" to projekt realizowany w przeciągu 2 miesięcy poprzedzających rozpoczęcie Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi.

Jego organizacją oraz prowadzeniem zajmuje się holenderski fotograf Rob Houkes we współpracy z Agnieszką Pomorską - Struszczyk, Małgorzatą Martynelis, Maciejem Jakóbczykiem, Moniką Krzesiak oraz kilkoma rodzinami z Bałut. Całość wspierają lokalne placówki socjalne oraz kulturalno - oświatowe działające na terenie dzielnicy.

　
"Bałuty - Bałuty" to projekt dokumentalny, który koncentruje się na życiu, miłości, relacjach międzyludzkich w rodzinach mieszkających na Bałutach.
　

Bałuty to stara (i prawdopodobnie najstarsza) część Łodzi, która w przeszłości była dzielnicą żydowską z pierwszą i zarazem najstarszą synagogą w mieście (przy ul. Wolborskiej). Podczas II wojny światowej na terenie Bałut utworzono getto, drugie w Europie co do wielkości zaraz po getcie warszawskim.

Bałuty zostały częściowo odbudowane w latach 50. i 60. Kilka starych budynków przetrwało do dziś. Ponieważ to częściowo zubożała i zaniedbana okolica, dlatego może być przez niektórych postrzegana jako swoiste getto, co jednak z pewnością jest mocno przesadzone przez wzgląd na historię, jaka wiąże się z tymi miejscami.

Projekt "Bałuty - Bałuty" zostanie zaprezentowany podczas Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi jako wystawa towarzysząca.

Who are the Balutars?

"Baluty-Baluty" is a photography project running in the two months before the start of the Photo Festiwal Lodz.

It’s organised and driven by the Dutch photographer Rob Houkes in cooperation with Agnieszka Pomorska-Struszczyk, Malgorzata Martynelis, Maciek Jacóbczyk, Monika Krzesiak and several Baluty-families and supported by social and cultural organisations in and around Baluty.

Baluty-Baluty is a documentary project which focuses on the life, relationships and love in families living in Baluty.

Baluty is an old (probably the oldest) district in Lodz, became Jewish quarter with the first and by that reason oldest synagogue in the city of Lodz (Altshtot synagogue) and turned into a notorious getto in WW II, Europe’s second largest ghetto exeeded only by that of Warsaw.

Baluty is party rebuild in the fifties and sixties. But some of the old buildings are still there. Because partly impoverished, Baluty is sometimes still seen as a ghetto which one could call – certainly in respect of the past – highly exaggareted.

Baluty-Baluty is presented at the Photofestival Lodz as an accompanying exhibition.

Baluty boys / Ziomki z Balut

"I couldn't move out from Lodz. That wouldn't be so easy for me. Here are my friends, people I care about so much. I couldn't move out from Baluty, it would be so hard... Here I was brought up, here I have all my friends, this is the place where I achieved a lot, this is simple MY PLACE. I just know that this is MY PLACE." - says O.S.T.R.

O.S.T.R. - Adam Ostrowski - born May 15, 1980 in Lodz, is famous polish hip-hop artist, composer, also violinist and music producer. He lives and writes his music in Baluty. This is a real local patriot, cause as a famous rapper he could easily move out from non-famous quarter, but he is still "one of them", still "ziomal" from Baluty.
Many Balutars are proud of him (I read it on different local forums).

It is a good moment now to mention about polish famous basketball player, Marcin Gortat. He plays in NBA league from 2008 and as the only polish player took part in final matches. He comes from Baluty and this fact is emphasized by him. He wears blue bracelet with the inscription: "Baluty boy" and says in interviews that after finishing his career he plans to settle down in Lodz.

"Nie, nie mógłbym się wyprowadzić z Łodzi. Nie byłoby to takie proste dla mnie. Tutaj mam wszystkich przyjaciół, tutaj mam osoby, na których mi strasznie zależy. Nie byłbym w stanie się wyprowadzić z Bałut, ciężko mi by było.[...]po prostu tutaj się wychowałem, tutaj mam wszystkich znajomych, tutaj udało mi się wszystko co się w moim życiu stało, to moje miejsce. Ja wiem, że to jest moje miejsce." - mówi O.S.T.R.

O.S.T.R. - Adam Ostrowski - urodzony 15 maja 1980, to znany polski raper, kompozytor, także skrzypek i producent muzyczny. Związany z Bałutami, gdzie mieszka i pracuje. Można nazwać go lokalnym patriotą; po tym, co osiągnąl, nie byloby mu trudno przenieć się do innego miasta czy chociażby "lepszej" dzielnicy. Ale jak sam twierdzi, tu jest jego miejsce, jest ziomalem z Bałut. Na różnych forach lokalnych można wyczytać, że mieszkańcy Balut są dumni z takiego krajana.

Warto wspomnieć też o słynnym koszykarzu, Marcinie Gortacie, który od 2008 roku jest zawodnikiem Orlando Magic. Jako jedyny Polak w historii NBA awansował do jej finału. Wychowywał się, podobnie jak Ostry, na Bałutach i jest z tą dzielnicą związany do dzis. Mówi o tym niebieska bransoletka na nadgarstku z napisem "Baluty boy", czyli "Chlopak z Balut".

Wszystko o miłości

Trwają przygotowania do kolejnej edycji Fotofestiwalu. Jego głównym punktem będzie wystawa “All my lovin’. Wszystko o miłości”, poświęcona relacjom rodzinnym i miłości. W prezentowanych projektach znajdziemy więc humor, pasję, walkę, historię i kompromis, nieco nostalgii i dużo refleksji.

Główny weekend zaplanowaliśmy na 6-9 maja. Sam festiwal potrwa do 30 maja. Więcej informacji już w przyszłym miesiącu na naszej nowej, odświeżonej stronie internetowej….

Warsztat fotograficzny dla rodzin mieszkających na terenie Starych Bałut i w ich okolicy.

W warsztatach fotograficznych przeprowadzanych przez holenderskiego fotografa Roba Houkes głównym tematem zdjęć będzie rodzina oraz ogólne pojęte życie rodzinne.

Artysta ma zamiar pracować z maksymalnie sześcioma lub ośmioma rodzinami z Bałut, w okresie dwóch miesięcy poprzedzających otwarcie Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi (6 maja 2010). To oznacza, iż projekt fotograficzny “Bałuty-Bałuty” zostanie przeprowadzony w marcu i kwietniu 2010, poczynając od 8 marca.

Podczas warsztatów każda rodzina otrzyma do dyspozycji jeden lub więcej prostych w obsłudze aparatów fotograficznych. Będzie to dla niej okazja do tego, aby poczuć się jak “prawdziwy” fotograf. Wybrane rodziny zostaną poproszone o dokumentację ich codziennego życia, fotografowanie rodziny, przyjaciół, swojego otoczenia, wykonanie autoportretów czy na przykład odzwierciedlenie swoich marzeń, pragnień, ambicji. Uczestnicząc w opisanych działaniach członkowie rodziny otrzymają wyjątkowy i zaskakujący obraz własnego życia. Dla każdego uczestnika będzie to znaczące doświadczenie.

Rezultatem projektu “Bałuty-Bałuty” będzie wystawa podczas łódzkiego Fotofestiwalu w maju 2010, zorganizowana prawdopodobnie na terenie Bałut. Zwiedzający z pewnością otrzymają równie zaskakujący i nieoczekiwany wizerunek życia mieszkańców dzisiejszych Bałut.

Yes, sensitive topic. I found this on the web as a reaction on a You-Tube video from VICTORHRZ in search after his family roots in Lodz.

"Really nice footage, even if i did not understand a word ;) Have to say as a modern citizien of Lodz that i am really sorry that curently our city misses so much of it's past. In 1939 one of four Lodz citizens was Jewish, there also was a lots of Russians and Germans. Poles as me were only in about 30%. During the war Germans destroyed almost all sinagogues.Some of them were really unique architecture.I hope Jews will come back sometime to Lodz, and someday we will be able to live together again"

That's strange enough what I feel in Lodz which is obviously so much a Jewish city... still... but without really having a Jewish community who matter...

Something is missing...

They say the Poles where indifferent about the fate of the Jews in WW II, and even hostile... If so, tragic choice at the wrong moment. But if not, what will had been able to do them against the absolute brutality and virulent aggression of the Nazis?

The Polish left wing activist and politician Sierakowski has formulated this feelings in a compelling monologue in an empty stadion in Warsaw. There he is an actor in a performance, so in an art piece, called 'Mary Koszmary' (Nightmares) by Yeal Bartana. (I mentioned this already earlier, see Mir i Wieza (Wall and Tower) for a description and more details)

The nice thing is that Stawomir Sierakowski, although being an actor at that very moment, exactly says what he actually means and stands for...

Yeal Bartana expresses the mutual bond from Polish society and the Jews also in another symbol...

a combination of the Polish eagle with the star of David....

A nasty virus caught me. And I am not the only victim. But... But I saw the first flowers in Rotterdam today! Does this mean Spring?... You may say it. In our Calvinist conservative country one will say: "No! One flower doesn't make Spring yet!" Pessimists and melancholiacs want more proof to believe...

I think it's a wonder and absolutely a sign of eternal return and renewal of everything ... seen of course (I am also not free from any pessimism) in the context of our short personal human existence...

So?... Yes! It means Spring!

One week at home and nearly three weeks to go before I travel to Lodz again. But I feel already nostalgia now... After one week in my hometown Rotterdam! Why?

What has Poland and Lodz in particular that it causes nostalgia?...

Night at Piotrkowska street...

or the streets around....

going home after dinner

(very often 'kebab" or "something traditional"...)

going through Zielona sneaking around in one of the courtyards....

or the Wielka Synagogue... as a fatamorgana...

which appears as on a film screen in the night...

or the displaced rickshaws on Piotrkowska...

or the extreme cold?

and the small (empty!) bottles Vodka everywhere in the snow...

or the speaking graffity...

and the beautiful structures on the walls, like modern art...

And in Amsterdam...

Still some snow fall in Lodz to I suppose... Sunny and warm only in Greece. But there they have other problems. Heavy financial snow fall... Different worlds but also connected.
Anyhow, we can learn from the Greeks how to solve problems... or anything.

Today I wrote a mail to Ludmila form the 'Fotofestiwal'. Thinking about the presentation in the end made things more clear. That's how it works!

Hi Ludmila,

About our thinking about the gallery and exhibition in the end of the Baluty Baluty project.

Just this, what came into my head...

Exhibition is part of the event also. For the spectator not something to look at but to walk in. He or she is going to be a part of the exhibition, hearing voices, seeing faces, "smelling" the neighboorhood....

(Very - very! - conceptual! hahaha!)

But I mean, I am not so interested in showing off with beautiful pictures (everybody does and it's very often boring) but I am looking for offering an experience by using photography; it's more an event then an "exhibition". (In my view)

Very conceptual indeed!

These are just brainwaves which came up and which I want to keep in mind. But this is the reason that I want the exhibition close as possible in Baluty. The old market place/Stary Rynek could be the perfect fit.

The Kutno-experience

On my way to Rotterdam... Two and a half hour waiting in... Kutno.

So hiding in the station restoration.

Couldn't not read the menu and choose by chance Vlaki which turns out to be soup from paunch. (cow flatulence) It smells like what it is and the taste brings me the remembrance back of boiling old and dirty socks. (yes, in the old days)
But it was nevertheless nutritive. So, don't understand me wrong: nothing incorrect!

Intermezzo

Sunday the 7th I went back to Holland, Rotterdam for preparing the project further; arranging all necessary things and supplies and so on.
March 8 I will travel back to Lodz again and then we will start effectively the Baluty - Baluty project. On the move!

In between I will continue this blog. Quite something to tell about the progress we made and the people we met, which is not on the blog yet.

For now just a few impressions from my journey yesterday.

Couldn't watch the catch but it was a dinner for sure... But!... probably more bones then something else!

Today I bought the book "Traces of the Litzmannstadt-Getto" A Guide to the Past, written by Joanna Podolska.

I can say one thing: it's horrifying...

It gives all, really ALL, the details - facts - about streets, houses and so on and the events which took place there. Don't read it, unless you have a strong stomach.

But from now on we can identify every single place in the former getto.

If you are stubborn person, like to learn things the hard way, here is the website after the book.

But... we will inform you anyway, our discoveries, day by day, your daily meal...

We visited the Galeria Bałucka at Stary Rynek 2 in Baluty. There was a exhibition of 'grafika' from Wawrzyniec Strzemieczny . One piece in particular took my attention.

In the park in front of the gallery stands this magnificent oak. But still I look in a different way at the landscape. No traces of blood in the snow?

A little bit further a boy is playing in the snow. At the very moment I took the picture I see him thinking about throwing a snowball towards me. Probably there it starts...

And we all trew snowballs. Didn't we?

This is the place where I live; this is my house for the moment: Macieks studio on the ground floor at Gdanska. Yes 'Grey' again. Poland in winter.

This sign I noticed finally after two weeks at the inside of the door of the building. (it's dark in there, poor light; and a very small sign). But! not everything icy!

Warsztat / Projekt "Bałuty - Bałuty"

W 2008 roku poznałem Krzysztofa Candrowicza, dyrektora artystycznego Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi. Opowiedział mi o Bałutach i o tym, że myślał o zorganizowaniu tam projektu fotograficznego.

Projekt miał być związany z tematem przewodnim Fotowestiwalu 2010 – „All my lovin’. Wszystko o miłości” i koncentrować się wokół rodziny oraz relacji rodzinnych. W skrócie to radości i smutki związane z życiem w rodzinie. W jaki sposób ludzie doświadczają relacji rodzinnych? Idea projektu – Bałuty to pokazanie na Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi czegoś, co wpisuje się w jego temat i pochodzi z samego serca miasta.

Candrowicz widział moje wcześniejsze projekty i uznał, że ten bardziej naturalny i osobisty sposób pokazania rodzin żyjących w Łodzi, będzie dobrym dodatkiem do programu Fotofestiwalu 2010.

Dlatego,trochę później, zaproponowałem podjęcie się zrealizowania tego projektu a odpowiedź brzmiała „tak”.

Trwają przygotowania do kolejnej edycji Fotofestiwalu.

Jego głównym punktem będzie wystawa “All my lovin’. Wszystko o miłości”, poświęcona relacjom rodzinnym i miłości.

W prezentowanych projektach znajdziemy więc humor, pasję, walkę, historię i kompromis, nieco nostalgii i dużo refleksji.

Główny weekend zaplanowaliśmy na 6-9 maja. Sam festiwal potrwa do 30 maja.

W projekcie "Bałuty - Bałuty" chcemy skoncentrować się na rodzinie oraz życiu rodzinnym. Mam zamiar pracować z maksymalnie sześcioma lub ośmioma rodzinami z Bałut w okresie dwóch miesięcy poprzedzających otwarcie Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi 6. maja 2010. To oznacza, iż projekt fotograficzny "Bałuty - Bałuty" przeprowadzimy w marcu i kwietniu 2010, poczynając od 8.marca.

Podczas warsztatów każda rodzina otrzyma do dyspozycji jeden lub więcej prostych w obsłudze aparatów fotograficznych. Będzie to dla niej okazja dotego, aby poczuć się jak "prawdziwy" fotograf.

Głównym tematem zdjęć będzie rodzina, jej członkowie, czy ogólnie pojęte życie rodzinne. Dlatego też wybrane rodziny zostaną poproszone o dokumentację ich codziennego życia, fotografowanie rodziny, przyjaciół, swojego otoczenia, wykonanie autoportretów czy na przykład odzwierciedlenie swoich marzeń, pragnień, ambicji.

Uczestnicząc w opisanych działaniach członkowie rodziny otrzymają wyjątkowy i zaskakujący obraz własnego życia. Dla każdego uczestnika będzie to znaczące doświadczenie.

Rezultatem projektu "Bałuty - Bałuty" będzie wystawa podczas łódzkiego Fotofestiwalu w maju 2010, zorganizowana prawdopodobnie na terenie Bałut. Zwiedzający z pewnością otrzymają równie zaskakujący i nieoczekiwany wizerunek życia mieszkańców dzisiejszych Bałut.

It's so sad, - or funny! - sometimes... life. It's all about love. But mostly we, humans, don't see it. Prefer to ignore it. Quarreling, even fighting instead.

Short cuts is a play written by and based on the short stories from Raymond Carver. It focus on the life of ordinary people. Made into a movie by Robert Altman. In his "Short cuts' one of the stories is named: So much love and so nearby... (or something like that) The story is of course about our daily blindness.

O, I find out now that it's called: So Much Water So Close To Home

But.... but this is a great love story . And great music .

Mur i Wieża

Yael Bartana’s film and video-installations have been included in many international exhibitions over the past years. In December Mur i Wieża had its premiere in the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.

Mur i Wieża (Wall and Tower) elaborates on the first part of the trilogy, Mary Koszmary (2007). In Mary Koszmary (Nightmares) Polish left activist Stawomir Sierakowski (1979) incites in a compelling monologue in an empty stadion in Warsaw 3 million Jews to return to Poland. With in the background the motto ‘3.300.000 Jews can change the life of 40.000.000 Poles’, the works touches upon one of the most essential questions of Polish history – the disastrous results of the Holocaust for Polish society.

Mur i Wieża answers the call of Sierakowski. In the same propagandist style the film shows how a group of young traditionally dressed Jewish pioneers return to Warsaw. At the spot where in World War II the Warsaw Ghetto was located, and beside the impressive ‘Heroes of the Ghetto’ Monument, the cheerfully young people are building a new settlement reminding one of the settlements founded by Jewish colonists in the thirties on Palestinian soil.

Yael Bartana hints at the Zionist dream, with heroic images of strong, beautiful men and women building their new country undisturbed by difficult conditions.

At the watchtower a blood-red flag with a new symbol has been raised – the Star of David combined with the Polish eagle. Approvingly watched by Stawomir Sierakowski, but simultaneously inquiringly looked upon by Polish passers-by.

With this work Yael Bartana rewinds history in a playful manner, strengthened again by the soundtrack. The film is supported by the Polish anthem Mazurek Dąbrowskiego, followed by the Israeli anthem Hatikva, played backwards.
Mur i Wieża cleverly balances on a fine line between fact and fiction. It encourages everyone to critically scrutinize his or her own constructed ideas about migrations and religious-cultural conflicts .

Third exploration Baluty

For our third exploration of the neigbourhood we wanted to look in the piece South of the church, there where also the Old synagogue Altshtot stood... "nothing remains from this synagoge", so I was curious to see if we could find out where it exactly was located on the Wolborskiej.

Gosia, Agnieszka and I started to walk in that direction to get an idea of the neighbourhood first. Well, it changed during the years as you can see in the pictures. it looks like, and it is actually is, not directly middle-class... but: blocs with apartments, nice houses, well painted, well maintained everything. Families with children, a man who tried to get his car out of the snow, somebody exercising her dog...

This neighbourhood really invites you to live here...

At the border from Baluty you find Park Staromiesky heavy used by the Balutians, winter and summer.

And yes, there we find a sign of the former synagogue... But is this the place where it stood on Wolborskiej? Most probably there where the apartments blocs are now.

This blog starts to go about synagogues only - yes, but... you cannot ignore the former presence from the Polish Jews here in Lodz and certainly not in Baluty... We have to incorporate that - unfortunataly historical - fact in our project without making it the main-issue.

So I promise this will be one of the last times about synagogues.

A little bit further (just behind the sign, you see a glimpse from it totally at the right-hand side of the picture) you find a statue with a text below it which says:

In this second 'message' "About Baluty-Baluty" I want to tell more about the project itself.
This message is a direct continuation of the first message in this blog. (see About Baluty-Baluty )
But now I will more focus on content, ideas, attitudes, approaches and actions. What and How.

In 2008 I met Krzysztof Candrowicz, director of the Fotofestiwal Lodz, and he told me about Baluty and the thoughts he had to do a photography project in Baluty. This project would have be linked with the theme of the Lodz Fotofestiwal 2010.
The theme should be and is All my lovin' and it focuses on family and family relations. In short it is about the joy and the pain connected with being a member of a family. How do people experience family relations?
The idea of the Baluty-project was/is that for the 'Fotofestiwal Lodz' it should be nice to have something on this theme coming from the city of Lodz itself.
Candrowicz' had seen something of my previous projects and his thought was that a kind of more social, more natural and intimate view on families living in Lodz could be a good supplement to the year programme of 2010.
So, later - I proposed to undertake this project and his answer was 'yes'.

So, in the Baluty-Baluty project we are going to focus on family and family life. For this I should like to work with approximately six or eight families in the two months before the opening of the Fotofestiwal Lodz 6 May 2010. That means that we are going to do the photo project named Baluty Baluty in March and April 2010 starting 8 March.

In the workshop each family gets one or more simple point-and-shoot camera(s). During the workshop they will have the opportunity to act as a 'real' photographer in their own life.

Family, family-members and family-life will be the main overall subject. In this respect they will documenting their everyday life, family, (auto)portrait, friends, surroundings and for example the themes dreams, wishes, ambitions.

Acting in this way the family-members will get a special and most probably unexpected insight in their own life. For every participant this will be a meaningful experience.

The Baluty-Baluty workshop will result in an exhibition in the Foto Festiwal in May 2010, most probably in the neigbourhood Baluty itself.

For sure it will also gives the visitor an unexpected and surprising insight in the lives of the Balutians.

Tonight and in the early morning it was snowing. It is a very dry and thin snow. But it gives quite a lot of snow... After a while looking out of my window I saw this fresh snow already covered by a dark-grey layer of everything what's in the air, coming out the chimneys, obviously.

Not much movement in between these houses except dirty snow, a cat coming out a basement (see the traces!) and playing in the snow (couldn't catch him/her with the camera) and people coming out with their dogs for some exercise and other necessary operations.

Open letter to Pavel Stingl, filmdirector

Dear Pavel,

I saw the trailer of your film "A ghetto named Baluty" (the movie itself seems not to be available yet) but... I don't think I like this film... It gives a lot of picturesque, colourful and tearjerking details from nowadays old Baluty. Nice! Well photographed!

BUT, these colourful sequences from nowadays Baluty in the movie (note: I cannot understand the text/speech; so my impression is only based on what I see) are consequently compared with images from the real ghetto in the Third Reich...

But this is something you cannot compare... not in the film and also not in a trailer.

I mean, Baluty today is NOT a slave laboury camp where at his peak 200,000 people where crammed in the old quarter of Stary Miasto and the slum quarter of Baluty, an area amounting to only six square kilometres where during the four years the ghetto existed some 60,000 people died through starvation, disease, hypothermia, suicide or execution.

In your film you cannot the contemporary rag merchant with his caddie compare with Jews (or Roma) transporting their last belongings and travelling towards their extermination.

Yes, Baluty is partly suffering from poverty, alcoholism and unemployment but this is first of all not the whole story and second absolutely in nothing comparable with the ghetto history.

Furthermore, I saw several nowadays ghetto's and I can tell you this: Baluty is a special neighbourhood, it certainly is, but Baluty has nothing to do with a ghetto, really nothing!

No Pavel Stingl, I will give it a try but I don't think I will make it 87 (or 83?) minutes long.

You say: Baluty then and Baluty now have much in common.... No Pavel Stingl, Baluty then and Baluty now have nothing in common.

It's easy going counterfeiting - falsifying - history. Or worse.

And finally for the ones who are devoted to geographical facts and admirers of maps here a link to the Lodz/Baluty district.
Coming from the Piotrkowska (down in the middle of the map) and after crossing the Park Staromiesky you hit ulicy Wolborskiej where the former Jewish quarter, later the ghetto and nowadays Stare Baluty starts.
More or less everything above these line (and visible on the map) is where we planned to focuse on for our project.

On Wolborskiej 20 stood the Orthodox Synagogue "Altshtot" . It was the oldests synagogue in Lodz, first constructed entirely from wood, later relocated and replaced with stone in 1860 - 1863.
Burnt down by the Nazis at the night of November 15-16, 1939, so - notice! - even before there was a ghetto established.
No trace of the synagogue remains today.

Furthermore I found a particular "map" of the old ghetto.

It had been made by:

Leon Jakubowicz, a shoemaker by training and a native of Lodz, began constructing this model of the Lodz ghetto soon after his arrival there from a prisoner-of-war camp in April 1940. The case holds a scale (1:5000) model of the ghetto, including streets, painted houses, bridges, churches, synagogue ruins, factories, cemeteries, and barbed wire around the ghetto edges. The model pieces are made from scrap wood. The case cover interior is lined with a collection of official seals, a ration card, and paper money, and the case exterior is covered with metal coins.

Coincidences, random actions which give the sensful whole after a while or unexpected meetings becoming crucial in your life - we usually try to remember it.

For me it was buying a bookguide about Jewish Lodz for my friend's birthday, visiting Baluty with Gosia and Rob and watching a documentary film "A ghetto named Baluty" during the same week.

Director Pavel Štingl tells some facts about a Jewish ghetto established by the Nazis in 1940. Investigates Baluty with the help of Czech Jews and inhabitants of the quarter so the documentary is very subjective and full of emotions.
It is worth seeing though focused only on poverty, alcoholism, and unemployment found in Baluty. "This is our Bronx" - says one of the Balutars from the film.

This Baluty-Baluty blog serves different purposes.

Baluty-Baluty.blogspot.com is first of all a part of the Baluty project itself, it will be finally a component in the eventual result, one of the outcomes of the project.
Baluty-Baluty.blogspot.com tells about our discoveries, troubles, thoughts, doubts, aroused curiosity, stupefaction, facts, sense and nonsense.
The whole process of realising this project will become afterwards traceable and visible for everyone who wants to find out. Not at least ourselves!
It's has been meant as a daily journal, you could see and read or use it as a more personal diary, or a notebook.

Baluty-Baluty.blogspot.com is also using and playing with 'new media' in a project. In this sense it's an experiment. We will see if and how it works.

This 'journal' will be made by everybody who wants to give comments or, being a member of the team or a participant/contributor, add their own observations, information, found footage and thoughts.

Sharing and collecting information and showing and telling about different perceptions Baluty-Baluty.blogspot.com functions as a communication tool during the project.
A tool to tell everybody interested and especially all the involved people about the progress and the nature of the project.

Baluty-Baluty.blogspot.com is like a table full of food*) with different tasts and nutritive healthy and sometimes probably not so healthy stuff.

I hope that our blog will raise understanding, interest, support, enthusiasm and not at last pleasure.

Some Poles have a nice sense for understatement; they say it's chilly... Minus 17 degree Celsius today! Chilly?

The one who made this sign seems more realistic to me.

Agnieczka said: Normally it's never that cold here. This winter is like they have in Russia. But now we have it also here!

And there is more to come.... On the radio they speak about minus 26 and even minus 30... for the weekend.
